Apartments vandalised and units used as drug dens PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 06 July 2010

VANDALS at the Sri Bayu Apartments in Desa Sri Bayu are a bane to the residents there as they are believed to be stealing the aluminium window panels and even glass window panels at the apartments.

More than half of the 90 units at the apartments have missing window panels. These vandals frequently hang out at the ground floor of the apartments.

Even worse is vandalism, grafitti on the walls and rubbish thrown all over the area despite the rubbish bins placed there.

The residents believe the vacant units at the apartments are hideouts for the youths taking drugs. Among the items that can be found in the vacants units are syringes, knives, plastic cases, candles, tubes and cigarette butts.

Exposed to the elements: A view of the Sri Bayu Apartments where most of the window panels are missing.
Dirty sight: A kitchen knife and rubbish litter a vacant unit at Sri Bayu Apartments.

Residents in three areas may be exempted from paying assessment PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 06 July 2010

THERE could be good news for residents in Bukit Beruntung, Bandar Sungai Buaya and Bukit Sentosa. They may be exempted from paying assessment from July to December 2010 if the Selangor government agrees.

The move is seen as a positive step towards bringing “life” to these areas.

Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS) president Tukiman Nail said he had a meeting with officials from the state.

“They wanted to hear the feedback from the presidents of the respective councils on this proposal.

Tukiman had proposed the idea and it looks like the state will give the green light for the residents in Bukit Beruntung and Bukit Sentosa.

It is business as usual at MBPJ PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 06 July 2010

PETALING Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman said the council’s administration will carry on as usual even though the new batch of councillors are not taking office on time.

“We will just put the meetings involving councillors on hold for the time being,” he said.

Asked if last year’s two-week delay in releasing the councillors’ list affected the council’s operations, the mayor said they did not face major problems.

“It was not a problem for us. We prefer the state to vet the candidates carefully than rushing them for the list,” he said.

Stiffer fines for human traffickers under changes to Act PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 06 July 2010

KUALA LUMPUR: Human traffickers will be fined between RM500,000 and RM1mil under proposed amendments to the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act.

The heavier penalty is part of a comprehensive plan to curb smuggling of migrants and human trafficking, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusop said.

At present, the fines are between RM50,000 and RM500,000.

Under the amendments tabled for first reading in Dewan Rakyat yesterday, the traffickers’ ill-gotten gains will also be forfeited after they are convicted.

The amendments are also meant to deal with the influx of illegal migrants who seek a better life in Malaysia or who use Malaysia as a transit point to a third country.

A kiwi boost & The mighty fruit PDF Print E-mail

Fresh air, exercise, good food, pleasant company in the wide expanses of New Zealand – the recipe to a healthier you.

THEY say stress is becoming a major risk factor for all sorts of disease, hence, the idea of relaxing to reduce levels of stress hormones and give the body a deserved break.

So, why not take a break, somewhere different, somewhere less frantic? Think New Zealand. Recently, I had the opportunity to go there for a working trip, and five days was all it took for me to realise that people who find New Zealand a boring travel destination or place to live might just be looking in the wrong places. True, it’s not exactly a shopping paradise. Their homely malls remind me fondly of the shopping complex in my neighbourhood – more suited for purposeful shopping. Even in its largest cities, life is generally laid back.

But the charm, I felt, isn’t in the malls, or even the herds of sheep that fascinates us city bumpkins. It is everywhere else, from the bright blue skies to the cotton-white clouds, to the beautiful lakes and easy humour the Kiwis are known for.

If you couple that with nutritious food and plenty of outdoor activity, it’s a pretty good recipe for anyone living here to live to a ripe old age. (If you go by the CIA’s World Factbook, the average life expectancy at birth in New Zealand is 80.48 years, ranked 18th in the world)

Kiwi, kiwi everywhere. The kiwis show that kiwifruit’s uses extend well beyond food. Here at kiwi 360, a centre that celebrates the history of kiwifruit, you have kiwifruit wine, kiwifruit scented candles, and kiwifruit soap on the side!
At Lake Tarawera, picturesque mountain ranges afar and the clear water pleases the eyes, and you get to fish for trout (responsibly, of course), and go jet or water skiing.
