KAJANG: Light offenders jailed less than three months will be allowed to do community work and continue to support the family, under a programme starting next month.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Abu Seman Yusop said the four-hour daily community work at compulsory attendance centres would be supervised by the Prisons Department.
"Offenders no longer have to serve sentences in jail but will do community work like cleaning old folks' and spastic children's homes under supervision of the Welfare Services Department," he said after visiting the Prisons College here Wednesday.
The programme would not only help overcome overcrowding in prisons but also help the Government reduce cost.
