WHEN the Texas-based Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) decided to come up with a global fraud study, it would not have taken long to identify the focus of the project – a category of fraud known as occupational fraud.

The association defines occupational fraud as “the use of one’s occupation for personal enrichment through the deliberate misuse or misapplication of the employing organisation’s resources or assets”.

Says the ACFE in the introduction to the 2010 Report to the Nations on Occupational Fraud and Abuse: “For businesses, no trust violations have the potential to be as harmful as those committed by the very individuals who are relied upon to make the organisation successful: its employees.”

Simultaneous vacant possession and strata title issuance soon PDF Print E-mail

KUALA LUMPUR: A proposal is in the works for vacant possession and strata title to be issued simultaneously, said Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung.

The ministry is working with the Natural Resources and Environ-ment Ministry to look into the amendments to allow for the proposal to be implemented.

It will involve the amendment of several Acts, including the Housing Development Act and the Strata Title Act.

Almost RM60 Million Spent To Install CCTV Cameras In 25 Local Authority Areas PDF Print E-mail

PETALING JAYA, June 18 (Bernama) -- The Housing and Local Government Ministry has allocated almost RM60 million to install and manage 496 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in 25 local authority areas nationwide to reduce crime, Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung said Friday.

He said the allocation was for a five-year period and all the CCTV cameras were expected to be installed by the end of August this year.

The locations of the CCTV cameras were selected based on information given by the police, he told reporters at his office here after chairing a meeting on his ministry's plans.

EPF contributors told to check their statements PDF Print E-mail

PETALING JAYA: The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has reminded its 6.33 million contributors to check their account statements for 2009, which have been sent to them, and seek clarification with their employers should they detect anything amiss.

“EPF account statements are important to help members keep track of their retirement savings. We strongly advise our members to thoroughly check their statements to ensure their savings are in order and their employers are submitting their contributions to the EPF on time,” EPF general manager for public relations Nik Affendi Jaafar said in a statement yesterday.

The EPF completed the delivery of the account statements to keep the contributors updated on the status of their savings.

UTM develops CCTV that can record images in the dark PDF Print E-mail

JOHOR BARU: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has developed a closed circuit television (CCTV) camera system which can produce clear and accurate images even in the dark.

The system, developed by the university's Photogrammetry and Laser Scanning Research Group headed by Prof Dr Zulkepli Majid of the Faculty of Geoinformation Science and Engineering, has the potential to be an efficient crime monitoring system.

Developed from the idea of Mohd Farid Mohd Ariff, 30, one of the 16 researchers in the group, it is an integration of modern imaging technology and geomatics, said Dr Zulkepli.
